As many gather in Des Moines for the World Food Prize this week, it's a good time to consider the irony of rural hunger in America - where food is all around but out of reach for many of our neighbors. Many of the people who work the land that feeds the world and provides low-cost, wholesome food for American consumers can't afford a meal for their own families. All the while, we see legislators that are threatening the very programs that help feed our most vulnerable citizens.

Education is the only way I can think of to pull my family up out of poverty. Right now I am enrolled in graduate school full time — on top of operating the daycare. It's my dream that when I graduate, we can be self-sufficient again. Not only that, but that we can give back again as well. I want to be able to give my time and attention to people who are trying to change their circumstances. When you're down and out, it takes a lot of support to turn your life around.

You can help reverse course and restore cuts to SNAP as the farm bill moves forward. Together, we can make solving hunger a priority for our nation's leaders. Call the Feeding America hotline at 886-527-1087 to be connected with your House Representative. Tell your representative that they must vote no when the farm bill goes to the House floor.

Despite our best efforts to convince Congress to balance the budget in a way that doesn't hurt families struggling with hunger, the House Agriculture Committee is poised to vote on a Farm Bill that will cut SNAP, or food stamps, by $21 billion. That's 8 billion meals that will be lost.
