Today is America Recycles Day. At Feeding America, we find it unacceptable that so much food goes to waste when 49 million Americans face hunger.

Every year, the Chronicle of Philanthropy examines the landscape of nonprofits in the US.

I have learned so many things and am beyond grateful for the experiences I have had during my time as a Child Hunger Corps Member.

As many gather in Des Moines for the World Food Prize this week, it's a good time to consider the irony of rural hunger in America - where food is all around but out of reach for many of our neighbors. Many of the people who work the land that feeds the world and provides low-cost, wholesome food for American consumers can't afford a meal for their own families. All the while, we see legislators that are threatening the very programs that help feed our most vulnerable citizens.

Because federal benefits offer the steadiest, most reliable source of food support, here at Feeding America we work to accelerate low-income families' access to these benefits. Through the new Online SNAP Referral Pilot Program, we have the potential to give thousands of SNAP eligible Americans the means to become food-secure for the long-term.

Tuesday morning, July 9, House Majority Leader Cantor informed the Republican Conference that they will proceed with consideration of the Farm Bill as two separate vehicles—Feeding America opposes these efforts, as splitting the bill into two parts would would likely result in deeper cuts to SNAP.This week our blog highlights just a few stories from families and individuals who rely on SNAP. May is National Strawberry Month and many Feeding America food banks have received their first round of strawberry donations over the last several weeks. Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County benefits annually from the plentiful strawberry harvests that take place near (and even next door) to their Food Bank. Last year alone, they provided 385,630 pounds of donated strawberries to their Santa Cruz County neighbors in need.

More than 150 partners, volunteers and staff of the Greater Chicago Food Depository traveled to Springfield on May 1, 2013, to discuss hunger in our community with our elected officials. I had the great opportunity to be a part of the group and lend my voice to end hunger in Illinois. Here's a look at my day...
