African American Hunger

While hunger has no boundaries, it does impact some communities more than others. African Americans are more than twice as likely to suffer from food insecurity as their white, non-Hispanic counterparts. They are disproportionately affected by unemployment and poverty as well.

The Feeding America network of food bank reaches every county in the nation. We target the most vulnerable populations to help make sure no American—no matter what community they belong to—goes without the food they need to feed their family.

  • Among all Feeding America clients, 26 percent are black. More than one in four black people in America are served by the Feeding America network.
  • One in four (25 percent) African American households are food insecure as compared with one in 10 (11 percent) of Caucasian households and one in seven (15 percent) households overall.
  • In 2012, African Americans were approximately twice as likely to be unemployed (14 percent) as their white, non-Hispanic counterparts (7 percent).
